Hypoxia (oxygen-depleted air) stimulates the body to release red blood cells and produce more. The organism uses them to improve oxygen uptake from the air we breathe. The increased oxygen supply is a kick-start for fat burning, which has fallen asleep. Interval hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy (IHHT) leads to an increase in healthy mitochondria in the cells. At the same time, damaged "old" mitochondria are destroyed. Mitochondria are the power plants of our cells. They convert body fat into the universal energy fuel ATP (adenosine triphosphate). When this change happens, cravings for sweets subside. The body no longer needs the quickly utilizable energy from simple carbohydrates because it can obtain twice as much energy from fats.

Mitochondria react sensitively to various everyday stresses. If they are overloaded or insufficiently supplied over a longer period of time, they lose performance and can no longer provide energy optimally.

IHHT - also known as interval hypoxia-hyperoxia therapy - is a form of modern hypoxia training. During a session lasting around 40 to 45 minutes, you breathe alternately low-oxygen air, known as hypoxia, and oxygen-rich air, known as hyperoxia, through a mask. These controlled oxygen changes simulate altitude training at around 3,000 to 4,000 meters above sea level without any physical exertion.

This targeted interval hypoxia-hyperoxia training triggers natural adaptation mechanisms in the body. During the hypoxia phase, your body reacts immediately. It releases more red blood cells and forms new ones. This improves your ability to absorb oxygen efficiently from the air you breathe, which is an important basis for more energy in everyday life.

However, the IHHT effect goes deeper: healthy mitochondria, i.e. the "power plants" of your cells, are strengthened and multiplied. At the same time, damaged and less efficient mitochondria are broken down. This improves mitochondrial function, increases the formation of adenosine triphosphate as a universal energy carrier and supports natural cell regeneration.

As a pleasant consequence, fat burning is activated, as mitochondria convert body fat into valuable energy. When this process is working optimally again, the craving for quickly available carbohydrates often subsides, as the body gains sufficient stable energy from fats.

Hypoxia training refers to a process in which the body temporarily breathes in oxygen-depleted air. In comparison, IHHT, interval hypoxia-hyperoxia training, goes one step further. In this method, the hypoxia phases are followed by short periods of hyperoxia in which particularly oxygen-rich air is inhaled. This interplay of hypoxia and hyperoxia has a much stronger effect on the mitochondria, the power plants of the cells. Healthy mitochondria are activated and multiplied, while weakened structures are broken down. This increases the body's ability to produce energy in the form of ATP and noticeably supports regeneration.

While classic hypoxia training mainly improves oxygen transport capacity, IHHT therefore also promotes cellular energy production, metabolic health and natural regeneration.
