New Balance was founded in Boston in 1906 and is now the third largest sporting goods manufacturer in the world. In 1960, the "Trackster" model, the world's first functional running shoe, was launched on the market. With the orthopaedic background of founder William R. Riley, the first model was offered in various widths. New Balance remained true to this and even today almost every model is offered in widths from 2A (very narrow) to 4E (very wide).
